This is a handy trick using a figure 8 as an auto locking descender. By using it this way, you can easily stop on the way down and stay in place.
the whole assembly is pre rigged and kept in the pocket, with the carabiner attached to the belt of the bunker pants. I have also seen folks integrate a webbing harness between the inner and outer layers of bunker pants.
