\nHMCS Summerside<\/em> departed today from Halifax, N.S. for Canada\u2019s arctic, where she will be joined later in August by HMCS Shawinigan<\/em>.
\n This deployment is a part of a 39-day mission north of the 60th
\nparallel, marking the Royal Canadian Navy\u2019s (RCN) longest uninterrupted
\narctic naval presence in recent years.<\/p>\n

During the deployment, HMCS Summerside<\/em> and HMCS Shawinigan<\/em>will
\n participate in Operations QIMMIQ and NANOOK, conducting surveillance
\nand presence activities, as well as joint training scenarios,
\nshowcasing Canadian Armed Forces assistance to civil emergency
\nmanagement and law enforcement agencies during threats to public
\nsafety.<\/p>\n

Operation NANOOK, the most widely recognized of all the northern
\ndeployments, and Operation QIMMIQ, a year-round persistent surveillance
\n and presence operation, are directed by Canadian Joint Operations
\nCommand. Other yearly Northern deployments include the springtime
\nOperation NUNALIVUT in the high Arctic and the summertime Operation
\nNUNAKPUT in the western Arctic .<\/p>\n

\u201cThe deployment of maritime coastal defence vessels in Canada\u2019s
\nnorthern waters serves as an example of how our Navy demonstrates
\nsovereignty in the North and, when authorized, assist other government
\ndepartments in enforcing national and international law,\u201d<\/q> said Vice Admiral Mark Norman, Commander of the RCN. \u201cThe
\n experience will also help us prepare the stage for more extensive
\noperations in the ice, to be conducted in the future by our Arctic and
\nOffshore Patrol Ships, by ironing out some of the logistical and
\noperating challenges generated by the sheer distances, remoteness, and
