Starting today, until Wednesday, November 20th, residents can log on to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/surveys\/index.html\">www.Halifax.ca\/surveys<\/a> and pick their favorite name from a list of five finalists.  Those choices are:<\/p>\n<p>                          <strong>Chebucto <\/strong>&#8211; This Mi\u2019kmaq<br \/>\nname means \u2018the biggest harbour\u2019.  There is evidence that the Mi\u2019kmaq<br \/>\nwould spend the summer on the shores of the Bedford Basin, before<br \/>\nheading inland for winter. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Christopher Stannix<\/strong> &#8211;<br \/>\nChristopher Stannix was a graduate of Auburn High School and attended<br \/>\nSaint Mary\u2019s University.  In 2001 he enlisted with the Canadian Armed<br \/>\nForces and in 2007 willingly accepted a reduction in rank to serve his<br \/>\ncounty.  In April 2007, Master Corporal Stannix was killed when the<br \/>\nvehicle he was in struck a roadside bomb.  He was 24 years old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Brownlow<\/strong> &#8211; Mr.<br \/>\nBrownlow was a former Mayor of Dartmouth from 1976 until 1985 and was<br \/>\nthe longest serving Mayor in Dartmouth\u2019s history.  In addition to great<br \/>\nservice to public life, Mr. Brownlow also served as the Queen\u2019s Harbour<br \/>\nMaster responsible for the safety of Halifax Harbour. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Keddy<\/strong> &#8211; \u2018Captain<br \/>\nBob\u2019 as he was known worked as a seaman on both the Bounty and the<br \/>\nBluenose II.  In 1969 he took over as the Captain of the<br \/>\nHalifax-Dartmouth Ferry and later served as Ferry Services Supervisor.<br \/>\nCaptain Keddy became synonymous with the ferry service until he retired<br \/>\nin 1998. He passed away in March 2013.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vincent Coleman <\/strong>&#8211; Vincent<br \/>\nColeman was a train dispatcher who, on the morning of the Halifax<br \/>\nExplosion, December 6, 1917, telegraphed a message instructing all<br \/>\ntrains inbound for Halifax to stop.  Hundreds of passengers were kept<br \/>\naway from the impending explosion because of his efforts.<\/p>\n<p>                          Additional information and background on all of the finalists are available on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/surveys\/index.html\">www.Halifax.ca\/surveys<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The original list of 1,200 names was<br \/>\nshortened down to 20 names by Metro Transit and HRM Corporate<br \/>\nCommunications staff, based on appropriateness and originality.  The<br \/>\nfinal list of five names was determined by a selection committee<br \/>\ncomprised of Mayor Savage and one councillor from each of the three HRM<br \/>\nCommunity Councils.
